About · the studio

Engineers who build,
not just specify.

Surau Engineering is a product and systems engineering firm working across mechanical, software, and tech disciplines. We exist because the line between hardware and software keeps getting blurrier — and most engineering teams aren't set up for it.

What drives us
· the principles

Our mechanical engineers and software engineers sit on the same team, review each other's work, and solve problems together. That means fewer handoffs, fewer surprises, and products that actually work as a whole.

Engineering should ship.Designs that never leave the page don't help anyone. We build to make things real.

Honesty over hedging. If an approach won't work, we say so early. If a timeline is unrealistic, we tell you.

Whole-system thinking. A great mechanical design with bad software (or vice versa) is still a bad product. We optimise the whole thing.

The team · co-founders

The people who scope the work
are the people doing it.

Surau is founder-led. The brief for additional team profiles will land here as we grow.
Anthony Surace
Co-founder

Anthony is an engineer and technologist whose work spans the full stack — from mechanical hardware to the software that runs it. Self-taught from his teens and building his own crypto mining rigs at 18, he founded Surau to bring hardware and software engineering under one roof.

Qualified in both mechanical engineering and computer science, he combines deep technical fluency across disciplines that most engineering firms keep separate. Years of self-directed work before and alongside his formal qualifications give him a working understanding of the kinds of systems most engineers only meet later in their careers.

His approach is hands-on and pragmatic — known for stripping problems back to what actually matters and building from there, whether the answer lives in mechanical design, code, or both. He is currently leading the design of the OmniChair, Surau's all-terrain personal mobility platform, while overseeing the firm's automotive software work.

Wiremu Raumati (Willy)
Co-founder

Willy is an engineer and executive whose career has been built around large-scale industrial operations — fleet maintenance, multi-site asset management, and the mission-critical infrastructure behind mining, maintenance, and civil construction.

Qualified in both engineering and law, he combines deep technical fluency with the commercial and operational judgement that complex, multi-site businesses demand. His CEO and COO roles have spanned operations with thousands of moving parts and zero tolerance for downtime.

His leadership style is disciplined, inclusive, and engaging — known for building high-performing teams and delivering in demanding environments where uptime is the metric that matters. Following a Parkinson's diagnosis in 2024, Willy continues to contribute to the business with determination and purpose, providing strategic oversight and operational insight. His resilience and commitment are a driving force within the organisation.
